CHILDREN’S MINISTRY
VACATION BIBLE
SCHOOL (VBS)
The purpose of the VBS is to reach children from ages three
(potty trained) through sixth grade with the word of Jesus Christ, and to help
them become His followers. Seventh grade through twelfth graders are encourage
to participate as Youth Helpers. This is typically a weeklong experience, each
day lasting about three hours. Activities for the children begin in the
Sanctuary at 9:00 AM. Many volunteers make VBS an exciting, learning experience
for everyone involved.
STEPPING STONES
Each group has a meal at
5:00 PM. The Children (Stepping Stones) then have Bible story time,
games and crafts and the Youth Group goes to the Assembly Room for Bible
Study with Rev. Weeks.
Stepping Stones
meets on Sunday nights from 5:00PM-6:30PM. We will continue to have
dinner and the curriculum and program will remain the same. We are making
this change with the desire that the new time will allow more children to
attend the program.
As the children grow older and become more active in
school activities, sports and homework become difficult to juggle. We
recognize this problem and hope that the time change will ease the pressure
of an active schedule. We still welcome all children from Kindergarten-High School.
CONFIRMATION CLASS
This class is for children who are
twelve years of age and/or in the sixth Grade. Older youth will be either taught
individually or in a group depending on the number desiring to join the church.
Confirmation classes usually begin in January and conclude by late May,
meeting on Sunday Mornings from 9:00 AM To 10:00 AM. Upon completion of the
course Those who wish to unite with the church as members will be received into
Membership during worship on a day designated as Confirmation Sunday. Following
this service the confirmand(s) and their relatives are invited to a
Celebration Luncheon in the Fellowship Hall.
NURSERY
We have a staffed nursery
available for children from birth
though five years of age. The nursery is
located in the Education wing and is available during Sunday services and Sunday
School. If you enjoy working with young children, volunteers are welcome to
assist our nursery staff.
SUNDAY SCHOOL – ELEMENTARY
and MIDDLE SCHOOL
Interesting,
child-friendly, Bible-based, and inspiring describe our Sunday School classes
here at Vandalia UMC. Parents, be sure your children have an opportunity to
attend these classes, which are so important for the Christian development of
our children. Children up through 2nd grade meet in the nursery on the first
floor across from the Trouper Room during Sunday School for their lesson.
Children in the 3rd and 4th grade class meet upstairs, as well as the 5th grade
through 8th grade class.
SUNDAY SCHOOL – HIGH SCHOOL
CLASS
Please join us for Sunday School
in the Youth room. Our class enjoys discussing relevant topics to today’s
teenager and researching the Bible to seek God’s word on these subjects. All
ninth graders through twelfth graders are welcome.
CHILDREN/YOUTH MUSIC
Ages:
Toddlers – 1st Grade
VUMC’s nursery provides a safe, loving
environment during Sunday School and Worship Service
9:00 – 11:45 AM.
While parents and grandparents attend the
Adult Worship Service toddlers receive age appropriate
stories and often ring their primary colored hand bells.
Our Little Lambs learn Bible lessons, sing, pray and
take their role in worship very seriously. They work
hard and enjoy performing for the congregation
occasionally. VUMC enforces a strict Safe Sanctuary
policy.
Ages: 2nd – 6th grades
For primary school
age children, 1st through 5th grade, as well as for our
6th grade “Confirmands”, VUMC provides a safe, loving
environment during Sunday School and Worship Service
9:00 – 11:45 AM. Sixth graders attend confirmation
class and take on leadership roles with the younger
children. At 9:00 a.m. children receive age appropriate
Sunday School lessons. At Junior Church they are given
explanations of morning worship relating to the weekly
sermon. VUMC offers Junior Church members excellent
additional opportunities. The main focus there is to
teach Biblical messages through song, liturgical dance,
hand motions, skits and other Biblical expressions of
young faith. Every third Sunday throughout the school
year they perform during a morning worship service.
VUMC enforces a Safe Sanctuary policy.
MUSICAL
TOOLS
Our Shining Lights
are blessed to have at their disposal a complete 3
octave set of Malmark Hand Bells, Malmark Hand Chimes,
Electronic Yamaha Keyboard, an Electronic Drum Set,
djembe drums, doumbek drums, tambourines and tom-toms.
Choristers work on teamwork as well as individual
development.

JOHN WESLEY RINGERS
(4th grade – High School)
Music students come together to ring
worship appropriate pieces. Our selections follow the
Methodist Church liturgical calendar. We sight read,
work on group performances and rhythm skills. We
rehearse Sunday mornings after Worship Service (normally
from 11:30 a.m. until 12:15 p.m.). We have room for
more youth age musicians in John Wesley Ringers. It
helps to be able to read music as we are blessed with a
core of young proficient musicians; however, Susan
Trissell will work with youth who do not yet know how to
read music. Youth Choirs participate from September -
May.
Mission Statement: Our mission is to make disciples
for Jesus Christ and to proclaim the good news of God’s
grace to all the people in our influence. VUMC
enforces a Safe Sanctuary policy.
