CHILDREN'S MUSIC

YOUTH MUSIC LEADERSHIP TEAM --
THE KING DAVID PLAYERS (Ages: 8th Grade – High School)

The King David Players of Vandalia United Methodist Church step-up as young leaders. You might see them as liturgists in the Live Nativity Scene during our 4:45 pm Christmas Eve Service. Or, you might catch them playing instruments or showcasing their vocal skills on November 20. They work closely with the Education and Worship Teams. It helps to be able to read music as we are blessed with a core of proficient musicians; however, Susan Trissell will work one-on-one with youth who do not yet know how to read music or clap on the 2nd and 4th beats.

(Ages: K-6th grade)

Young children learn to work together as part of this ensemble. They combat “stage fright” and even enjoy their performances. The Shining Lights have begun working on a very lively version of a traditional Christian song. Here are lyrics, written long ago by Joseph M. Scriven. It will be performed during the November 20 10:30am worship service:
What a friend we have in Jesus, all our sins and griefs to bear!
What a privilege to carry everything to God in prayer!
O what peace we often forfeit, O what needless pain we bear,
All because we do not carry everything to God in prayer.

The Shining Lights Children’s Choir is blessed to have a complete 3 octave set of Malmark hand chimes, djembe and doumbek drums, electronic Yamaha keyboard and an electronic drum set at its disposal. Members of the Shining Lights are afforded many opportunities to express their young beliefs and build upon their faith. We meet every Sunday as part of our Junior Church ministry first in the Seekers Classroom for study time. Next, in their own Choir Room (located beside the nursery). This group performs the 3rd Sunday of EVERY month throughout the school year. The Shining Lights Choir has ample room for additional happy, eager-to-learn K-6th graders. And even ample patience and support to work with the “not so happy ones”. All are welcome. Adult leaders pass background checks as VUMC follows a strict Safe Sanctuary policy.

JOHN WESLEY RINGERS (Ages: 6th Grade – High School)
Youth in 6th – 12th grades come together to ring worship appropriate pieces. We are members of the National Choristers Guild and incorporate many of their new works published right here in Dayton OH at Lorenz Publishing. We sight read, work on group performances and rhythm skills. We take time to share prayers, concerns and joys.

LITTLE LAMBS CHOIR (Ages: Toddlers – Pre-K)
Toddlers are taught Bible stories each week. Little Lambs also sing and ring our primary colored hand bells. The Little Lambs of Vandalia UMC take their role in worship very seriously. Little Lambs learn several age appropriate songs. Here are sample lyrics to practice at home.
“Jesus Loves Me This I Know. For the Bible tells me so. Little ones to Him belong. They are weak but He is strong. Yes, Jesus Loves Me. Yes, Jesus Loves Me. Yes, Jesus Loves Me. The Bible tells me so.” (written by Anna B Warner)

“The B-I-B-L-E. Yes, that’s the book for me. I stand alone on the word of GOD. The B-I-B-L-E.” (public domain)

STEPPING STONES

Weekly meal 5:30-6:00 PM. The Children (Stepping Stones) then have Bible story time, games and crafts and the Youth Group goes to the Assembly Room for Bible Study with Rev. Weeks.
All children from Kindergarten-High School are welcome from 5:30-7:00PM Sunday evenings.

CONFIRMATION CLASS

This class is for children who are twelve years of age and/or in the sixth grade. Older children will be in a group with other 6th grade students desiring to join the church. Confirmation classes begin in January and conclude by late May, meeting on Sunday Mornings from 9:00 AM To 10:00 AM. Upon completion of the course those who wish to unite with the church as members will be received into Membership during worship on a day designated as Confirmation Sunday. Following this service the confirmands and their relatives are invited to a FREE Celebration Luncheon in the Fellowship Hall. Their luncheon is sponsored by our Evangelism Team.

NURSERY

We have a staffed nursery available for children from birth
through five years of age. The nursery is located in the Education wing and is available during Sunday School and Sunday morning Worship Service. If you enjoy working with young children please let us know. Volunteers are welcome to assist our nursery staff once background checks are completed. A Safe Sanctuary Policy is adhered to at VUMC.

SUNDAY SCHOOL – ELEMENTARY and MIDDLE SCHOOL

Interesting, child-friendly, Bible-based, and inspiring describe our Sunday School classes here at Vandalia UMC. Parents, be sure your children have an opportunity to attend these classes, which are so important for the Christian development of our children. Children up through age 5 meet in the nursery on the first floor for their lesson. Children in the 2nd through 8th grade class meet upstairs. Sunday School classrooms are marked according to age group.

SUNDAY SCHOOL – HIGH SCHOOL CLASS

Please join us for Sunday School in the Youth room. Our class enjoys discussing relevant topics to today’s teenager and researching the Bible to seek God’s word on these subjects. All ninth graders through twelfth graders are welcome.

Mission Statement: Our mission is to make disciples for Jesus Christ and to proclaim the good news of God’s grace to all the people in our influence. VUMC enforces a Safe Sanctuary policy.

VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL (VBS)

The purpose of the VBS is to reach children from ages three (potty trained) through sixth grade with the word of Jesus Christ, and to help them become His followers. Seventh grade through twelfth graders are encourage to participate as Youth Helpers. This is typically a weeklong experience during the summer, each day lasting about three hours. Activities for the children begin in the Sanctuary at 9:00 AM. Many volunteers make VBS an exciting, learning experience for everyone involved.
